Roger's book was an outgrowth of his speaking engagements to professional audiences in the 1980s. Roger was talking about asset allocation long before it became a mainstream topic. Following his talks, people would often suggest that he write a book about it. Eventually he did just that. Although the book was written primarily for investment professionals, the book is readable by a lay audience.
The acclaim from this book extends beyond anything Roger envisioned when he wrote it. Many of the early supporters of the book are luminaries in the world of investing. Sir John Templeton, acknowledged as one of the greatest investment geniuses of the 20th century, wrote the foreword. Following the release of the second edition, Dow Jones Investment Advisor magazine, the largest circulation magazine for financial advisors, presented Roger with their Portfolio Management Award in the category of book publication for his work. Over its lifetime, it has remained a consistent best-seller on this topic.
Asset Allocation was published in 1990, 1996, 2000, and now again in 2008. According to the publisher, McGraw-Hill, it is rare to invite an author to publish a book in a fourth edition, at which point it is considered a classic. The book also has been released in Japanese, German, Korean and Chinese editions.
Update: As of March 1, 2008, McGraw-Hill has informed Roger that Asset Allocation is slated to be published in an English language edition for India. The publisher will be Tata McGraw-Hill Publishing Company, a subsidiary of McGraw-Hill Companies. Check back soon for more details.
